The modern Petitot River occupies a narrow channel that is incised into a broader valley by 50 m. The incised valley is about 500 m wide, whereas, the broad valley is about 10 km wide and may be preglacial. The broad valley lies about 150 m below the level of the Etsho Plateau, which occupies most of the southern part of the map area. The plateau is underlain by flat lying Dunvegan Formation and is more than 600 m above sea level. When the continental Laurentide Ice Sheet glaciated the map area during the Late Wisconsinan (ca. 25 000-10 000 years ago), it covered the area with glacial drift. Borrow pits along the Cabin Geetla road show 3 to 10 m of till, sporadic glaciofluvial gravels and ice-thrust blocks of sandstone and shale, covering the bedrock. The surface of the drift covering the plateau is extensively fluted. Some of the glacial flutings are over 10 km long, indicating glacial flow from the east-northeast. Small ridges, which are crevasse fillings and minor moraines, overlie and crosscut some the flutings and were deposited after the flute-forming advance, or later during deglaciation. Northward-flowing esker systems in the east part of the map area indicate that parts of the ice sheet became stagnant on the northeast flank Etsho Plateau. The eskers are composed of till and glaciofluvial gravel and likely exploited preexisting crevasses patterns beneath the ice sheet. Poorly drained areas are usually underlain by clayey till on the plateau and glaciolacustrine sediments in the lowlands in the north part of the map area. These areas are mainly covered by muskeg swamps and bogs, forming hummocky peatlands and probably contain significant amounts of ground ice. Purpose: Supplemental_Information: Data set is in English.
