Online_Linkage: Description: Abstract: Abstract OF4931 This Open File contains: (1) a geological bedrock compilation (1:500 000 scale); (2) planar and linear structural point data; (3) lithology and mineral assemblage data; (4) sample number, radiometric age, interpretation, dated material, and analytical method for available geochronology samples; (5) a comprehensive tectonostratigraphic legend for all Archean, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, Neoproterozoic, Ordovician, and Cretaceous to Paleocene map units and structures in the map area; (6) an up-to-date reference list for larger-scale source maps; and (7) hydrographic features and topographic contours for Baffin Island and adjacent islands (Nunavut) south of 70oN. The purpose of this Open File is to provide a complete, analogue and digital, internally consistent, and georeferenced collection of spatial data that will assist interested parties in mineral exploration, environmental studies, land use planning, and other investigations requiring up-to-date earth sciences information. The Open File map was compiled, modified and generalized from previously published Open File maps, A-series maps, and reports produced by the Geological Survey of Canada for Baffin Island and adjacent islands of Nunavut south of 70oN. The compilation map shows a variety of units of Archean to Paleocene age, which can be grouped into the following bedrock tectonostratigraphic assemblages. In the southern portion of the map area, the lower-plate Archean basement comprises dominantly felsic orthogneisses and plutonic units correlated with the Superior craton of northern Quebec and ranging in age between 3220+32/-23 - 2737±2 Ma. Overlying the felsic basement is a suite of parautochthonous basal clastic metasedimentary units and tholeiitic metabasalts (Povungnituk Group) associated with initial Paleoproterozoic rifting of the northern Superior craton. In the Cape Smith Belt of northern Quebec, these units have yielded ages between 2038+4/-2 - 1959+3.1/-2.7 Ma. A south-verging tectonic boundary or crustal suture (Bergeron suture) separates the northern Superior craton margin from allochthonous crustal elements of the Churchill plate to the north. In the hanging wall of the Bergeron suture on Baffin Island, a magmatic arc terrane forms the leading edge of the Churchill plate and includes arc-derived clastic units (Sugluk Group) and a dominantly plutonic assemblage (Narsajuaq arc). The plutonic rocks of the arc terrane can be grouped into two temporally and petrologically distinct, suites. The older suite includes calc-alkaline layered diorite-tonalite gneiss and is dated between 1863±2 - 1845±2 Ma. It is interpreted as an island-arc assemblage built on Paleoproterozoic oceanic crust and a rifted sliver of Archean continental crust. The younger suite comprises crosscutting, gneissic to massive, monzodiorite to granite plutons and predominates on Baffin Island. It is bracketed between 1842+5/-3 - 1820+4/-3 Ma and is interpreted as having been emplaced in an Andean-type continental arc setting. On southern Baffin Island, a second south-verging tectonic boundary or crustal suture (Soper River suture) separates the Narsajuaq arc terrane in its footwall from the Archean and Paleoproterozoic units of the Meta Incognita microcontinent in its hanging wall. The microcontinent comprises a continental margin shelf succession (Lake Harbour Group) and its crystalline basement (Ramsay River orthogneiss), and an extensive suite of Andean margin-type quartz diorite to monzogranitic plutons (Cumberland batholith) that intrude both the shelf succession and crystalline basement. The age of the shelf succession is bracketed between 1934±2 - ca. 1880 Ma, and that of the underlying crystalline basement between 3019±5 - 1950+6/-4 Ma. Plutons of the Cumberland batholith have yielded ages between 1865+4/-2 - 1848±2 Ma. At this point it remains unclear whether the microcontinent was initially rifted from the Superior craton, whether it constitutes a rifted fragment of the northern Rae craton (below), or whether it represents crust exotic with respect to both bounding cratons. In the central Baffin Island area (northern portion of compilation area) the upper-plate Rae craton comprises felsic orthogneisses, metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks (Mary River Group), and younger felsic plutonic rocks ranging in age between 2868+13/-12 - 2702±3 Ma. The southern margin of the craton is unconformably overlain by the Paleoproterozoic Piling and Hoare Bay groups, which comprise: continental margin clastic and carbonate platform strata (younger than 2159±16 Ma), mafic intrusive, extrusive, and sedimentary rift units (younger than 1980±11 Ma), and foredeep turbidites (younger than 1915±8 Ma). Various felsic plutonic rocks, ranging in age from 1.90-1.85 Ga and including the northernmost component of the Cumberland batholith, intrude the south-facing Piling and Hoare Bay groups. Archean and Paleoproterozoic units are overlain by Mesoproterozoic sandstone and quartzite (Fury and Hecla Formation) and are intruded by massive, non-metamorphosed diabase dykes of Neoproterozoic age (Franklin intrusions). Ordovician limestone, dolostone, and calcareous dolostone unconformably overly the Precambrian units principally in the vicinity of Foxe Basin. Cretaceous to Paleocene subarkosic sandstone and basalt flows are preserved on the north side of the Cumberland Peninsula. Purpose: Supplemental_Information: Data set is in English.
