INTRODUCTION

The Northern Resources Development Program is designed to improve the quality of life of Canadians through the stimulation of new investment in exploration and development in Canada's North, by creating and disseminating new, comprehensive, regional mineral and energy geoscience products. In addition, the Program will contribute to building the knowledge, skills and capacities needed by northerners to meaningfully guide, participate in and derive substantive benefits from this development.

This CD-ROM represents a new data product developed in consultation with clients by the Western Churchill Metallogeny and Remote Predictive Mapping projects of the Northern Resources Development Program. It is geared to stimulating exploration through dissemination of hitherto unavailable geoscience information. The map area (see Figure 1 below), situated in the western Churchill Province of the Precambrian Shield in eastern Nunavut (see Figure 2 below), is presently part of a region of active diamond, gold and Ni-Cu-PGE exploration and has not been mapped systematically since the GSC’s major helicopter reconnaissance projects of the 1960’s and 70’s. It has been recognized that although a geological map at 1:250,000 scale cannot be meaningfully produced from the bedrock field data, the published 1:1,000,000 scale maps (GSC Open File 4236) resulting from the early work do not reflect the variety of lithologic units originally observed. In many instances, even point locales of certain units can be of interest to the exploration community.

The data contained herein represent a compilation of all up-to-date geological, mineral occurrence, geophysical and remotely sensed data for the Tehery Lake-Wager Bay area (NTS 56B/C/F/G). Database and image types are summarized below. In addition, a geological figure at map scale is presented and discussed, that stems from an integration of the bedrock and geophysical data. This CD-ROM represents Part One in a two part product. A second CD-ROM of enhanced geophysical images and other integrated GIS products will be released separately.

Individuals that have contributed to the data included on this CD-ROM, or who have helped in the processing and compiling of data themes are listed in Proj_Particpants.htm.

The data provided on the CD-ROM have been created with several users in mind. Those with a limited knowledge of digital data and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology can install the Dynamic MapsTM viewing software developed by SKE Inc., and included on this CD-ROM, and easily view and query the data themes. The more experienced GIS user can open the files in ESRI® ArcViewTM 3.2 using an ArcView project file to view the themes. Files are also provided in native MapInfoTM (.tab) format.

As a result of the rapid dissemination of this regional data set, a quantitative assessment of the accuracy for each theme has not been determined. However, a qualitative horizontal accuracy of +/- 250 metres for all themes is estimated.
