This CD contains data and documentation describing the regional surficial geology of the Scotian Shelf. The contents of the CD are as follows: 1. ScotianShelfRegionalSurficialGeologyCompilation.pdf -- this report describes the mapping methods employed by the Geological Survey of Canada during a systematic regional mapping program of the sediments on the Scotian Shelf from the late 1960s to 1980s. It also discusses the map limitations and evolution of a compiled vector data set. This report was created using Microsoft Word and exported to PDF format. 2. ScotianShelfRegionalSurficialGeology - this folder contains a vector polygon shape file (.SHP), and associated files, of surficial geology units compiled from numerous sources. The folder also contains a layer file (.LYR) that is used by the ArcGIS 8.3 software to symbolize the geology polygons with standard GSC fill colours based on the texture field. A text file (.txt) containing Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata tags describing the data set is provided as well. 3. SourceDocuments - this folder contains six Marine Science Paper publications in PDF format with associated text files (.TXT) containing FGDC metadata tags that describe the reports. 4. SourceTiffFiles - this folder contains scanned maps used in the vector compilation: six maps of the Scotian Shelf taken from the Marine Science Paper series and one map from GSC Open File Report 1692. The scanned maps are available as TIFF files with the associated world files (TFW) that contain the appropriate georeferencing information required by ESRI software. Each of the TIFF files has a corresponding text file (TXT) containing FGDC metadata tags that describe the data set. 5. Acrobat Reader ver. 5.0 for Windows and Macintosh PPC The files in PDF format can be viewed with Acrobat Reader as provided. Installing Adobe Acrobat reader for Windows AcroRd32.exe These files are self-extracting files for installing Adobe Acrobat reader version 5.0.
