README FILE - GSC Open File 5278 GETTING STARTED If this CD-ROM fails to start automatically it will be necessary to manually install Adobe AcrobatReader (ver 5.05) so that the Portable Document Files (PDF) may be viewed. See the final paragraph in this Readme File for AcrobatReader installation instructions. Additionally ESRI® ArcReader version 9.1 free software is provided and allows viewing of the supplied portable map file. See end of this Readme File for ArcReader installation instructions. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Personal computer running Windows® 98, 2000, XP. The GIS data in this open file are provided in formats suitable for use with ArcInfo Version 8.3 or later or ArcView 3.2 on a PC platform or suitable for any software capable of translating SHAPE files. ABOUT THE CD-ROM: This CD contains the Geological Survey of Canada Open File 5278. The primary content of the open file are three printable/plotable pdf files. Most of the data illustrated in the two oversized pdf files is also contained in files (ESRI® shape or geotif files) suitable for use in a GIS system. KEYWORD METADATA THEME_KEYWORD: GSC OPEN FILE 5278, GIS, bedrock geology, offshore seismic structure mapping, Cenozoic basins THEME_KEYWORD_THESAURUS: GIS, offshore geology, Bedrock geology, structure closure, Nares strait fault, PLACE_KEYWORD: Nares strait PLACE_KEYWORD_THESAURUS: Devon Island, Ellesmere Island, Greenland, Bylot Island, Lancaster Sound, Baffin Bay, Coburg Island, Jones Sound, Makison Inlet, Kennedy channel, Kane Basin, NTS sheets map appears in; NTS 29, NTS 38, NTS 39, NTS 49, NTS 120 and NTS 340 VIEWING THE DIGITAL MAPS IN PDF: A full scale PDF version of the Nares bedrock geology (sheet 1of2), thematic maps (sheet 2of2) and illustrated report is included in the \PDFs\ folder. Use AcrobatReader to open them. Plot dimensions are 42"x60" and 36" x 60" Ground distance resolution is 1:1 000 000 map scale equivalent for: "Nares_geol_GSC_OF5278_1of2.pdf" and, 1:2 250 000 map scale equivalent for: "Nares_geol_GSC_OF5278_2of2.pdf" FOR EXPERT GIS USERS: 13 ESRI® shape files and 8 georeferenced tif files reside in folders on the CD-Rom. These files are Polar stereographic projected files identical to the projection used for the maps in pdf form. The projection particulars are: Name: Polar Stereographic False_Easting: 0.000000 False_Northing: 0.000000 Central_Meridian: -100.000000 Scale_Factor: 1.000000 Latitude_Of_Origin: 90.000000 Geographic coodinate system: Name: GCS_WGS_1984 Angular Unit: Degree (0.017453292519943299) Prime Meridian: Greenwich (0.000000000000000000) Spheroid: WGS_1984 Semimajor Axis: 6378137.000000000000000000 Semiminor Axis: 6356752.314245179300000000 Inverse Flattening: 298.257223563000030000 There are a number of ESRI® geo-referenced tif images, including the on-shore geology, in the folder \GIS\DATA\ONSHORE_GEO_REF_FILES, that import to any GIS program, Another set of files (ArcInfo® Shape files), can be found in the folder \GIS\DATA\OFFSHORE_SHP_FILES\. These files contain the off-shore geology and their corresponding components. They can be imported into GIS programs that support these type of files. The full text of the onshore geology legend resides in the tab delimited text file "onshore_Leg.txt" and can be "joined" to the onshore geology geotif "onshore_geology7" through the "ObjectID" field which is common to both. This then provides the geological "map unit" and "legend text" as attributes of the geotiff color palette. There is an ESRI® ".mxd" file that can be opened with ESRI® ArcMap and GIS file location can be redirected to a user-preferred location such as a local hard drive. There are also two ESRI® .lyr files which may help the appearance is using ArcMap® Some of the georeferenced tif files may require remapping a color (eg. offshore color) to null, such as files onshore_geology7.tif, geolabel_text.tif, nares_n_faults.tif, nares_t_faults2.tif and geographic_text.tif CD DIRECTORY STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS SUMMARY \ (start directory or root) contains ANSI text files pertaining to the CD and CD contents, and executables which automate the CD operation: \readme.txt (this file) \Citation.txt \licence.txt \AUTOPLAY.EXE \autoplay.ico \AutoPlay.ini \autorun.inf \4splash.bmp \schema.ini MAPS AND DOCUMENT FOLDER: \PDFs\ Nares_geol_GSC_OF5278_1of2.pdf (The Nares geology Map, a complete version) Nares_geol_GSC_OF5278_2of2.pdf (The geoscience thematic map) Nares_OF5278_report.pdf (A pdf document, with an overview of the bedrock geology of Nares Strait region.
